Miniatures and Models

Gundam 1/400 Range

The goal of playing MechaStellar is to let you use your own mecha figures or model kits on the tabletop. There is only one change in rules for larger figures which is a small increase in melee range. All distances are measured from the center of the model so you don’t need to worry about base sizes.

Below you’ll find photos of different mecha figures and kits we have used on the tabletop as well as a few guides at the bottom if you are interested in collecting a certain size range.

You can use small models 2-4″ in height and reuse existing 28mm terrain which is common for popular wargames like 40k.

GaoGaiGar SRC and Gundam Standart and Ultimate Operation

You can also play with larger models like Gunpla (5-7″), Super Minipla (SMP) (4-6″), or Chogokin such as Soul of Chogokin (~8″) or Super Robot Chogokin (~6″).

MSIA Gundam Wing and Revoltech Evangelion

When using larger figures you will need bigger terrain, for city terrain consider using the cardboard fold up buildings from Dropzone Commander.

SMP Getter Robo, Gundam Standart (Wing & Freedom), Go Nagai / Anime Robot Italy Collection for Combattler V

You can also try N-Scale buildings that are used for model trains. You can find more examples and suppliers on the terrain page: https://mechastellar.com/terrain/

Gundam 1/400 Collection

You can also use proxy models for figures or terrain, above are leftover cookie containers flipped over to represent buildings while the Dijeh model is instead representing a Dijeh SE-R

Gundam 1/300 SOG 1/400 M.F.S., and G Sight

For many of the battle reports you will see the Gundam 1/400 line which comes with a broad range of models, or the Gundam 1/300 which is a smaller range with a high level detail. The Gundam Artifact line is currently sold and is close to the 1/400 scale.

MSIA G Gundam

We also use figures that are roughly 1/220 or 1/200 which includes Gundam FW Ultimate Operation or Standart.

The older Mobile Suit in Action (MSIA) figures from the 2000s seen above is in between the 1/200 scale and the common 1/144 scale of RG or HG Gunpla.

Guncannon 1/144 MSIA Ultimate Operation SOG 1/1400

Here’s a comparison shot of Guncannons from Left to Right we have the 1/144 HG Gunpla, the (~1/170) MSIA Guncannon, the (~1/200) FW Ultimate Operation Guncannon, the 1/300 SOG Guncannon and finally the 1/400 Guncannon.

Front Row: Yuusha Retsuden Collection Vol1 and Vol2

For other Mecha series there are various Gashapon (Capsule Toys) that are small scale.

SRC Mazin Emperor G, Go Nagai Italy Great Mazinger, SMP Black Getter, Romando Neo Getter, Sentinel T-Rex Black Getter

Or you can use larger figures from either SMP, Chogokin, Sentinel, Revoltech, Robot Spirits (Damashii) etc.

For size and scale you can read the in-depth size and scale post here. To summarize we recommend either using a “Vs Movie” approach where all figures are around the same height or an “Approximate Scale” where most of the units fielded are around the same size but some units that are much larger (i.e. Daitarn, Gunbuster, Evangelions, King J-Der, etc.) are represented by a larger figure. The larger figures don’t have to perfectly match scale, just be larger than normal.

The important thing is to have fun and roll dice with your mecha figures, so don’t worry if the sizes aren’t perfect.

Here are some in-depth posts showing the types of miniatures used in MechaStellar:

For Stellar Warships here is a post for collecting Gundam Warships.

Some enterprising players have printed off Mobile Suit artwork then attached them to standee bases to represent their models. Others who prefer virtual tabletops have done similar with Roll20 using shrunk down MS Artwork to represent their units.

There are also 3d printing options available if you would like to use custom equipment for your Gunpla or to print off favorite units like the Freeden from Gundam X that never received a figure or model kit.
