[MS] – Gurren Lagann Miniatures

In these post we’ll go through some of the miniature, models and figures you can use for Gurren Lagann while playing a game of MechaStellar.

When playing MechaStellar we advise you to pick either a Versus movie scale (all figures are roughly the same height) or an approximate scale where some very large robots (i.e. 100+ meter robots like Daitarn 3 or Ideon) are represented by larger figures while everything else is around the same height. You can read more about the recommended size and scale here.

First let’s start with the smallest figure available. Pictured above is one of the Gurren Lagann Gashapon (capsule toy) next to other gashapon toys with the RX 78-2 Gundam (1/400 scale) on the left and Mazinger Z on the right.

It also comes with two miniature ganmen that anchor onto the whirlwind although you can take them off and base them as ganmen enemies if you like. The figure is made by banpresto and if you’re trying to find one on ebay or a Japanese second-hand market you may try searching for Gurren Lagann minifigure ichiban kuji banpresto.

This one is small enough to work well with small minis like the 1/400 Gundam series. Gurren Lagann itself is <2″ but the giga drill pushes it towards 4″.

Ichiban Kuji also did a number of larger Gurren Lagann figures including a good number of Ganmen (or Gunmen if you prefer) although those are over a decade old now, hard to find and the prices aren’t cheap (anywhere from $50-100 each). Sometimes you can get lucky and find the mini figure Gurren Lagann for $10-25.

Next up we have a Gurren Lagann trading figures made by Konami. Featured above is Gurren Lagann and King Kittan. They used to go for about $10-20 but are a lot harder to find nowadays. If you can find one be sure to snag one, since it’s a very nicely detailed model made of sturdy plastic and comes with its own base.

Size wise they are quite a bit larger than the 1/400 and 1/300 scale Gundam figures. Your best best would be to use these along side the ~1/200 scale figures such as the Gundam Standart featured in the front row or the Gundam MSIA featured in the back row. Of course 1/144 scale Gunpla would also work great since Gurren Lagann (and Ganmen) are quite a bit shorter than Mobile Suits. Gurren Lagann is estimated around 13m while most Mobile Suits are around 16-18m.

In this photo Gurren is around 4″ and King Kittan is around 3″.

Next up we have the recently released The GATTAI Infinite Combining Gurren Dan Lagann by Goodsmile who many know for their Mecha Moderoid line.

The scale is a bit bigger than the Konami action figures. The Space King Kittan is around 4″ while Gurren Lagann is at 5.5″.

While Moderoid are pretty good model kits, The Gattai for Gurren Lagann isn’t a model kit but instead a bunch of preassembled figures that you can connect together to form one giant Gurren Lagann composed of the Gurren Dan (Gurren Brigade). It’s a pretty neat concept, although the build quality and plastic isn’t that impressive, especially for the price tag (around $150-170 + Shipping from 1999 or HLJ).

Front Row: Dayakkaiser, Mo-Shogun, and Kidknuckle Ganmen (Gunmen) from Gurren Lagann

Still if you’re looking to run on the tabletop any of the supporting Ganmen this is the best place to get them.

Here’s a comparison shot with the gashapon, konami trading figures and The Gattai figures.

If you prefer heavy duty figures with die-cast parts (Gokin) there is the Super Robot Chogokin (SRC) for Gurren Lagann which is well made and well liked when released. Like most SRC it stands around 6″ and are usually pretty reasonably priced.

For larger and or more detailed (and expensive figures) there are a quite a few out there made by Sentinel, CCS and Bandai. I recently got the the Sentinel 2023 release and I’m very pleased with the size and scale of the figure compared to others.

Be advised these are very expensive so only get one if you really love the figure. If you travel or move a lot like our family you’ll want to keep the original packaging so it survives each transit.

Revoltech Gurren Lagann Lazengann Enki

If you’re looking for older figures Revoltech put out a great line of figures in the 2000s for Gurren Lagann. Sometimes used Revoltech hit the market as low as $20, they’re great figures to put a base on and duke it out on the tabletop.

Revoltech is usually around 5″ in height, above we have Enki and Gurren Lagann in the background with Lazengann in the foreground. Size wise you can even mix in the Konami trading figures on the left which don’t look out of place.

Pictured above is a comparison shot with the Revoltech figures in the background plus the smaller Konami Gurren Lagann trading figure. In the foreground we have a 1/220 Burning Gundam in the center, a 1/300 Gundam then a 1/400 Gundam on the right.

Pictured above is the Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann and the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The 1/400 scale figures and the Konami trading figure are included for scale.

The only downside to the Revoltech figures is the size, Gurren Lagann is very notable for getting bigger and bigger whereas all the Revoltech figures will be the same height so it won’t be able to convey a good sense of scale on the tabletop. Pictured above is the Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann and the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The 1/400 scale figures and the Konami trading figure are included for scale.

To that end you may want to try model kits. The Plaiobot Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann kit by Sentinel is 8.5″ for instance. Unfortunately, there is no gigantic model yet for the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, but hopefully one day.

Here is the miniatures landing page for MechaStellar where you will find other posts detailing miniatures from other Mecha series such as Getter Robo, Mazinger Z and Gundam.
