Collecting Stellar warships from Captain Harlock

Hasegawa Arcadia Bandai SSX

With the release of Captain Harlock it’s time to a post for collecting some of the more famous space battleships out there. We’ll start with the Arcadia. The Arcadia’s length was revised after it’s initial run which is why these model kits are greatly different sizes despite being roughly the same scale.

The Arcadia on the right is made by Hasegawa and is 1:1500 scale. It’s a nice kit with decent detail and even includes the knife ram for fans of the Endless Odyssey. The model is around 13 inches long with another 3″ for the knife ram attachment.

Here’s a photo of the model with it’s box. You can find it on secondary markets from $30-50.

Next up we have the older Bandai kit for the Endless Orbit SSX show. This one is considerably smaller, the length is around 9.5″ but the overall figure is quite small compared to the Hasegawa figure.

There’s also a Deathshadow kit at the same size.

As you can see this one is almost the same scale at 1/1600 but since it was using a smaller sized Arcadia the kit is much smaller. You can usually find this on secondary markets for about $15-30.

Above is a comparison shot of both ships. I ended up buying both kits at the same time since I wasn’t sure what the sizes would be and I’m glad I did now I can share with others who are considering buying one.

Since we play MechaStellar with both small scale and large figures it’s nice having both options for the Arcadia. Above is the SSX 9.5″ long kit which blends in well with the older Gundam model kits for ships like the Salamis or Musai, in this battle it was being attacked by 1/400 Gundam miniatures.

Here’s the longer 13″ Hasegawa kit for Arcadia in a battle against 1/220 scale Gundam figures which are around 4″ tall. It’s by no means a perfect true scale but it’s a decent approximation.

If you only plan on buying one model kit definitely go with the Hasegawa kit, the Arcadia is huge so it’s no problem if it huge compared to your Gundam or Super Robot gashapon on the tabletop.

Speaking of Gashapon there also gashapon for the Arcadia out there with both the green ship and the black ship. Pictured above is an Arcadia gashapon next to the older Gundam Salamis model kits. It’s a bit smaller than the Endless Orbit SSX but still works perfectly find while using Gundam 1/400 minis for approximate scale.

For Gokin (diecast) enthusiasts the GX-67 Soul of Chogokin (SOC) for the Arcadia comes in at a whopping 18.5″ and is a fantastic figure. While you could grab this for a steal in the US near it’s initial release for around $250, the price has doubled since then and you’ll often see this on secondary markets for around $450-500.

Aoshima also released a gokin of the Arcadia at a smaller 12″ size and much lower price point. It also comes with miniature space wolf fighter as well, but since it’s also an older product you may have a hard time tracking down a complete one.

Here’s a post for collecting Space Battleship Yamato models which includes the classic and modern 2199 remake versions.
