MechaStellar VER9.5 Gameplay Example – Round 4

(Note for we moved Gundam X forward for the sake of pictures but it is actually slightly further back to benefit from cover in between him and attackers)

Here we have a gameplay example for MechaStellar VER9.5 using 1/144 scale Gundam figure. On one side we have Kamille’s Zeta Gundam and Kai’s Guncannon, on the other we have the unlikely teamup of Garrod’s Gundam X and Norris Packard Gouf Custom. Read on below the break for Round 4.

Round 4

The Gouf Gundam X team are up first.  They consider their options.  If they activate the Gouf Custom first, he’s unlikely to finish off Kamille’s Zeta Gundam this turn, but if they activate Garrod’s Gundam X first they have a very good chance of finishing off Kai’s Guncannon.  We’ll just have to hope Norris can survive the next turn.

Garrod gains [M+2] from his pilot trait. Garrod challenges Kai’s Guncannon who accepts

Garrod moves up but is still too far to get Target Lock. 

  • 2x Focus then Shoot
  • Barrage (+2 shots) vs Dodge (+3 Evade) 
  • Shooting 12 vs Evade+3+3 = S12 vs E+6 = 6+
    • 6d10 = [1,3,5,6,8,9] = 1 Crit + 2 Hits
      • Dodge lets him evade on a 6+ instead of an 8+ but so far was only worthwhile on 2 dice, where he could have instead chose Guard for +3 Blocks
    • after Improvise [4,5,6,8,8,9] = 2 Hits 
      • After the reroll Dodge was worthwhile on 4 dice, and now a better deal than +3 Blocks from Guard.
      • Typically Guard is the safe bet while Dodge is the risky bet where you may wind up evading many attacks or you may get a disastrous roll and wish you had chosen Guard instead.
      • + 2 Focus = 4 Hits total
    • Kai will lose [M-4] rather than risk the Armor Saves.
    • Kai knows if his HP gets too low Norris can break away from melee and finish him off with the Gatling gun easily.

Garrod could have burned [M-5] to fire the Satellite cannon in Round 4, but decided to wait till Round 5 to fire it for free.

Kai’s Guncannon

When he activates Kai’s pilot trait gives him [M+1]. He considers getting into rapid fire range with his beam rifle but then remembers that the Gundam X has anti-beam coating. Instead he’ll use his cannons which have a Rapid Fire penalty (-1 shot) at close range.

  • 1 action to Focus and 1 to Shoot
  • Precision (+2 ACC) vs Guard (+1 Block) 
  • Shooting 10+2 vs Evade+5 = S12 vs E+5 = 7+
    • [2,3,4,7] = 1 Crit + 2 Hits = 4 Hits
    • Cover Blocks 2 + Guard 1 = 3 Blocks
      • DMG is 400 so Cover survives on a 4+ [4]
    • Takes 1 hits for 400 DMG
    • Gundam X HP 1300/4100

Guncannon will now use Full Throttle and put distance between him and the Gouf Custom as well as gaining cover

Norris turn. Time for an arc whip encore.

  • Norris starts with the Arc Whip,
  • With Shooting 7 vs Evade 7 he’s relying on crits regardless so he chooses Barrage (+2 Shots)
  • Kamille can only choose Dodge since Arc Weapons can only be blocked by [Barriers] or Momentum
  • 9d10 = [2,3,3,3,4,7,7,8] = 3 Crits + 1 Hit
    • (note shooting criticals are capped at 3 after that they become regular hits)
    • + 2 Focus = 9 Hits
  • Zeta Gundam will risk it with 3d10 Armor Saves
    • ARM PEN 6S  vs ARM Sv+1, Kamille needs a 5+
    • 3d10 = [2,5,9] = 1 Failed Save so Zeta Gundam is at -1 Action

Now for melee giving the Gouf [M+1]. Norris uses the Make it Count skill for Hits equal to the Round (+4 Hits) as a reminder skills like this need to be declared before the attack.

  • Norris puts 7d10 on ATK and gets +2 Hits as the Attacker
  • Kamille puts 9d10 on DEF and chooses Guard for +2 Blocks
    • Norris ATK [1,1,4,7,8,9] = 2 Hits + 1 Crit
      • + 1 Heat Sword + 2 Attacker + 4 Make it Count = 11 Hits
    • Kamille DEF [1,1,1,2,4,4,5,5,8] = 3 Blocks
      • + 1 Shield + 2 Guard = 6 Blocks
    • Zeta Gundam takes 1500 DMG plus a Finishing Blow for 1000 DMG
    • ARM Sv+1 vs ARM PEN 5 = 4+
      • 3d10 = [4,9,10] passing all three
    • Zeta Gundam HP 200/3600
  • EOT [M]  Zeta Cannon 2  Gouf X 8

Kamille’s turn, he puts his all into melee [M+1]

  • As the attacker he gets (+2 Hits)
  • Norris gets Guard & Counter (+2 Blocks/Hits) thanks to Lone Wolf
  • Norris puts 4d10 on DEF and 3d10 on ATK
    • Kamilles ATK 9d10 = [2,3,5,7,9,9,10,10,10] = 2 Hits + 5 Crits = 12 Hits
      • + 2 Attacker + 2 Kamille’s pilot trait = 16 Hits
    • Norris DEF 4d10 = [3,3,4,9]
    • After Improvise [4,5,8,9] = 2 Blocks
      • +2 Guard + 2 Shield = 6 Blocks
      • Norris uses his +3 Blocks from Superior Instincts twice for +6 Blocks
        • Total 12 Blocks
        • Then uses [M-4] to block the remaining 4 Hits
    • Norris counter ATK 3d10 = [3,3,5] = 1 Hit
      • + 1 Heat Sword + 2 Counter = 3 Hits
      • Kamille’s Shield blocks 1 Hit
      • Kamille uses his 3rd NT Flash for +3 Blocks

Having gained a 2nd Momentum in melee, Zeta Gundam now loses [M-2] to disengage and attack again.

  • He uses Seize the Day for +1 Action
    • He has -1 action from the Arc whip earlier
  • He gets within 8″ of Gundam X and uses his Grenade Launcher
  • Barrage (+2 Shots) vs Guard (+1 Block) 
  • S12 vs E+5 = 7+
    • 6d10 [1,1,3,4,6,7] = 3 Crits + 2 Hits
    • After Improvise [3,3,4,5,6,7] = 2 Crits + 3 Hits = 7 Hits
    • Rapid Fire Grenade Launcher gives +4 Hits
    • Kamille’s pilot trait gives +4 Hits with low DMG weapons
      • Total 15 Hits
    • Gundam X has 2 Blocks from Cover + 1 Guard + 1 Challenge= 4 Blocks
    • 11 Hits at 200 DMG each = 2200 DMG
  • Gundam X has 1300 HP left so they could take at most 6 hits for 1200 DMG, unfortunately they don’t have enough Momentum to block 5 Hits and so he is destroyed [M+1]

Kamille uses their remainder movement to get behind cover

Norris declares Revenge on Kamille.

At the end of his turn Kamille rolls 3d10 to remove stun DMG, each 5+ can remove a stun damage. With [2,6,10] he is back to normal.

End of Round

  • Zeta Cannon gain [M+2] from CP and [M+2] from Kai’s resourceful = 6
  • Gouf X gain [M+3] from CPs = 7
