Battle Report – Gundam X & Gurren Lagann

Below you’ll find a battle report using the MechaStellar VER 9.2 Rules with units that released in the November 2023 Roster Update. For this match we are using 1/144 scale Gundam figures, Revoltech for Gurren Lagann, Enki and Lazengann and the recently released Moderoid Infinite Combining Gurren Dan Lagann. At the end we have a mecha tactics after action report.

On one side we have the GX-9900 from After War Gundam X as well as Gurren Lagann, King Kittan and most of the Gurren Brigade (Dayakkaiser, Kid Knuckle, Mo-Shogun, Sawzorthn, Twinboekun). On the other side we have Gundam Virsago and several Jenice and Septems represented by Zakus and Goufs as well as the Spiral King’s Lazengann and Viral’s original Enki. Total points is 2300 on each side.

Simon & Rossiu – Commander Trait – Bold Leader

The Spiral King – Commander Trait – Unyielding

Lazengann moves up the midfield and captures a Control Point for an early [M+1]. Simon throw’s the Gurren Sunglasses as a boomerang from the high ground scoring minor damage before rushing into melee combat. Both sides use “Spiral Power” for bonus power with Simon putting his into bonus Armor Penetration and Lord Genome putting his into bonus Damage.

Unfortunately Gurren Lagann’s initial attack is met with stiff resistance and the skilled martial artist piloting the Lazengann strikes back with a devastating round house kick dealing considerable damage to Gurren lagann.

Meanwhile Enki moves up, briefly considers using its powerful Sun Attack but the Gurren Brigade are unfortunately out of Rapid Fire range for the AOE attack and so ends its turn. Twinboekun jointly piloted by Jorgun and Balinbow move forward and fire their chain knuckles at Enki for minor damage. A Septem moves in and fires its bazooka sapping a lot of Momentum after Twinboekun fails to evade any.

Kid Knuckle advances but forgets to block LOS and so the Septem on the high ground fires its bazooka draining considerable momentum. Mo-Shogun moves forward and becomes the closest target to protect Kid Knuckle. Another Septem blows through most of its HP.

From the backfield Sawzthorne targets the Septem on the high ground with its sonic cannon. It deals solid damage but fails to destroy it.

The Virsago moves up field, its claw beams nearly kill Mo-Shogun. The GX ignores the Virsago for now knowing the Ace Evade will evade its attack and instead blows a hole through a Jenice whose blue feet are visible in the photo above.

King Kittan rockets forward and captures the Control Point before Virsago can.

Last but not least Dayakkaiser blasts away at the Septem across the field but it stubbornly refuses to die.

Round 2

Mo-Shogun is up first, its katana slicing into the hidden Septem. It is then quickly killed off by the red Jenice.

King Kittan boldy charges into melee striking with Kiyalunga before Virsago can activate and destroy any of his comrades. He deals respectable damage but the failed armor saves from Virsago’s beam saber deal a staggering amount of damage in return.

On it’s turn, the Virsago strikes in melee but Kittan fully parry’s the attack this time. The Virsago burns its second action to shoot in melee using its strike claws to send King Kittan flying into the scrapheap. It then retreats behind cover.

Meanwhile Jorgun and Balinbow get cocky, between their chain fists and melee attack they take away most of Enki’s HP, but his counterattack is brutal and slices the dual-ganmen in half.

Viral moves to support the Spiral King on his turn, he attacks Gurren Lagann who takes all the hits knocking him below 50% HP and responds in kind obliterating Enki with his drills.

Simon & Rossiu’s turn. High on Momentum from their recent victory they are willing to stake it all on one attack. Spiral Power activates along with the special attack:

Unfortunately, Lazengann rolled spectacularly poorly on Melee Defense. Simon & Rossiu were about to pierce the heavens (and Lazengann’s cockpit) before they were reminded that as the commander Lazengann has the unyielding trait.

Lazengann survives with 1 HP biting the giga drill in half and lashes out at Gurren Lagann with its drill whips then a melee attack. Simon & Rossiu go for a risky gambit, as long as they can get 3 hits through they will destroy Lazengann on the counterattack. They roll several 10s on Melee Defense and burn through Momentum to survive.

The counterattack has 5 dice, [2,4,4,8,10] and with one to spare they drive the point home destroying Lazengann.

On the right flank the GX has a terrific turn, its beam rifle finally finishes off the Septem on the high ground. It uses Make it Count for a bonus attack against the Virsago who survives once more.

But Kid Knuckle is still alive and uses its high move to pop over beside the Virsago and finish it off with a hail of gunfire.

The Blue Septem tries to take out Gurren Lagann but their Momentum is too strong. Dayakkaiser takes the high ground and obliterates it from above.

Moving into Round 3 only the Red Jenice survived.

Round 3

The red Jenice is up first, it was 2 hits away from destroying Gurren Lagann with its machine gun. GL rockets across the board and punches the head off the Jenice, and in typical TTGL fashion it gains another fashionable helmet.

Mecha Tactics After Action Report

GX + Gurren Lagann Player

Woohoo, victory at last! It’s nice to see the good guys win and without losing too many comrades either. I’m not sure if it was luck or just having durable units but I was very pleased that most of my army survived till the very end. I also got a great victory shot with Gurren Lagann taking the enemy helm just like the GX from earlier.

I normally prefer long range combat but I went against the grain this time and pushed my heavy hitters into melee early. It could have went very poorly for me but thankfully my units were a bit tougher than most.

My only disappointment is I still haven’t had a chance to use the satellite cannon in a big battle yet =(

Virsago + Lazengannn Player

It’s interesting how even through the Jenice / Septem and Gurren Brigade were around similar points costs they felt remarkably different. Having the mobile suits I had great evade, but my opponent played around that and avoided attacking them with anything but high accuracy attacks. Meanwhile I’m stuck shooting into these high HP bricks, the bazookas did good work (or would have if I waited until the enemy Momentum was low) and the machine guns were no slouch either.

I definitely misplayed Virsago and Lazengann, I think they are far better as hit and run units and both of them got stuck in melee combat before they could do that. I was pleased that Virsago was able to tear into people at close and medium range like in the show.

As for the Spiral King, well, we got to reenact a great moment from the show where he bites the Giga Drill in half, that was pretty cool. Had I gotten luckier on the dice rolls he would have survived and I would have cleaned house on that side of the field, but instead it was a crushing defeat for me.
