MechaStellar NOV23 – HP Overhaul

I noticed in the October update that a lot of G Gundam units don’t have a good reason to invest in Armor beyond level 3, so I was working on a HP tweak for Armor 4+ units.  While working on that tweak I noticed a loophole on a Dom Variant where it could be built better and cheaper as a Frame 3 unit instead of a Frame 2 unit.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, many of the points hikes in the last couple years have originated in someone on the team finding an edge case where you could build one unit cheaper and better as a higher frame unit.

When looking at this unit we went over a few ideas on how to fix it.

MechaStellar VER 9.1 and October Roster Update

The October Update is here and we have additional units from Gurren Lagann as well as a few requests from Mobile Suit Gundam including some terrestial warships such as the Gaw and Big Tray.

We also have a balance patch, the first one in four months. This affects a great number of weapons and units (including the fan favorite Big Zam) which you can find summarized after the break. If you want to read more in-depth check out these two posts.

Next Series Poll Closes on October 31st

We’ve gotten quite a lot of responses on this poll. In the early days Aura Battler Dunbine was in the lead, then it was briefly taken by 80s Super Robot show. In surprise twist more Braves (Yuusha) and Captain Harlock have jumped from the back to the front in the last week.

Only a couple days left so get your votes in now if you haven’t already. We choose our next 3 series to include in the MechaStellar roster based on the poll.

Playtest Photos – Melee Overhaul 2

Here’s another short playtest report focusing on Super Robots and their Gundam Fight counterparts. We have Getter Robo G and Great Mazinger each 750pts on one team. On the other we have Combattler V, Gundam Maxter and Bolt Gundam, each 500pts.

We are using the SRW module here, so double HP, more Armor Saves, Rally and Knockback for Super Robots.

October – Melee and Close Range Weapons Overhaul

We’ve received a lot of feedback regarding GaoGaiGar and to a lesser extent Getter Dragon specifically regarding weapons that give 3 Hits on a Critical Hit.  The chief complaint being that these units can often stack many hits to the point where it’s almost impossible to resist them in melee.  As a result we’ve had to look over these units and this weapon type and consider solutions.

For those who exclusively play Gundam units the bottom line up front is that Beam Sabers and Heat Hawks are dropping down to 300 DMG per hit, Heat whips and Dragon Fangs are now a melee attack option.  Units with high crit abilities such as Sandrock or Minaret Gundam are having their weapons reworked.  For the Super Robot fans read on below the break.

MechaStellar – Model Kits and Large Figures for Gundam Units

A comparison of figures with front to back being 1/400, 1/300, 1/200, 1/170, 1/144 scale for Gundam 00 Raiser and Guncannon
A comparison of figures with front to back being 1/400, 1/300, 1/200, 1/170, 1/144 scale for Gundam 00 Raiser and Guncannon

While the MechaStellar wargame is often played using small scale figures such as the 1/400 Gundam range or various Super Robot Wars gashapon (capsule toys) you can also play it using your favorite large figures and model kits. While our other post focused on small scale minis that are 1.5 to 4 inches in height this post will look at all the larger figures including Gunpla, Robot Spirits (Robot Damashii), Mobile Suit in Action (MSIA) and G-Frame.

We’ll examine the pros and cons of each Gundam mini collection and at the end we’ll have a number of comparison shots showing the different ranges side by side.

The primary purpose of this guide is to let you see the size of various Gundam models. That way if you decide to start collecting and want to mix and match you know which ranges work well together and which figures you want to battle it out on the tabletop.

When playing MechaStellar as a SRW style game with mecha from different franchises we advise you to pick either a Versus movie scale (all figures are roughly the same height) or an approximate scale where some very large robots (i.e. 100+ meter robots like Daitarn 3 or Ideon) are represented by larger figures while everything else is around the same height. You can read more about the recommended size and scale here.
