On this page we’re going to discuss the different miniatures available for Mobile Suit Gundam for use in the MechaStellar Wargame Rules.

This post will feature the Gundam 1/400 collection, the 1/300 S.O.G. range, and a number of ranges that some estimate as 1/200 to 1/220 scale but for the sake of convenience we’ll call them 1/200 for this write-up. We’ll examine the pros and cons of each Gundam mini collection and at the end we’ll have a number of comparison shots showing the different ranges side by side.

The primary purpose of this guide is to let you see the size of various Gundam models. That way if you decide to start collecting and want to mix and match you know which ranges work well together and which figures you want to battle it out on the tabletop.

When playing MechaStellar as a SRW style game with mecha from different franchises we advise you to pick either a Versus movie scale (all figures are roughly the same height) or an approximate scale where some very large robots (i.e. 100+ meter robots like Daitarn 3 or Ideon) are represented by larger figures while everything else is around the same height. You can read more about the recommended size and scale here.

MechaStellar VER 9 – Tabletop Gundam Gameplay Example – Setup and Round 1

In this series of posts we are going to do a Gameplay Example for MechaStellar using units from Mobile Suit Gundam. We are using some fan favorites from the 08th MS Team including Shiro Amada, Karen Joshua, and Terry Sanders Jr, who will be referred to as Shiro, Karen and Sanders for short.

On the Zeon side we have an assortment of Zaku IIs, Zaku Cannons & Doms all being led by an amphibious Acguy. You can look at the Mecha Unit Profiles for the Federation and Zeon on the downloads page. The Gundam models used for this example are from the Gundam 1/400 collection. You can use larger size figures such as Gundam 1/144 scale, here’s an example battle report of what figures of those scale look like on the tabletop.

Stellar Warship Playtest Photos – Pegasus Class Assault Carrier

These tests were focused on the Pegasus class of warships with the most notable being Mobile Suit Gundam’s White Base from the One Year War. The model featured here is the Albion from 0083 Stardust Memory. They are a very formidable ship but as you can see from the last few photos even they can be brought down by a concerted effort from Zakus, Rick Doms and Musai class cruisers.

Stellar Warship Playtest Photos – Magellan Class Battleship

Here are some photos taken during some recent games testing out the Magellan class battleship from Mobile Suit Gundam. Since I don’t have my Magellans kits built yet, we used Captain Harlock’s The Arcadia as a placeholder model. As you can see from the final photo the Magellan class Battleship did pretty well.

MechaStellar November Roster Update

We’re pushing out the roster update early for the month of November. We’ve been testing out for a few months now what the gameplay would be like if we were to reduce the cost of Skilled and Ace Pilots down to 50pts per level. Overall, we’re satisfied with how the Mission Packs are running as well as versus games so we’ve decided to implement the change. All Mecha Unit Profiles have been updated to reflect this, a few units were rebalanced to get down to 500pts or 250pts as a result. Getter Robo profiles will be updated at the end of the month along with a continuation of the Narrative campaign and more Mechasaurus units.

With the change to Pilot costs we can also return to simpler Army Momemtum brackets of 500/1000/1500/2000+. The core rules were updated to reflect that. I’ve also improved the Make it Count universal skill. This was meant to be in October’s update but was missed when we released it.

Sandbox Mission Packs and Demo Games mission packs have also been updated to reflect the new costs.

Rules Update Summary

  • Cost reduction for Skilled and Ace Pilots
  • Army Momentum brackets back to 500/1000/15000/2000+
  • Improved Universal Skill – Make it Count

Unit Profile Update Summary

  • Adjusted traits that used to give +1 Focus to instead give +1 Accuracy such as Headhunter or Hunting for a Rival
  • Fix error for beam carbine/heat attack profiles:  units affected Zeon Amphibious units, GM Command Space, Neue Ziel, Mazinger Z, Doublas M2, Glossam X2
  • Fixed error on Gebera Tetra, older profile replaced with newer profile

MechaStellar Battle Report – Mazinger + Getter + Gundam vs Kikaiju + Mechasaurus + Zeon

Here’s the third game in our final round of testing for the Mazinger Z units, we of coursed wanted to finish with a Getter Robo teamup so we included the Getter team plus a beefy Mechasaurus. The models used are the Gundam 1/300 S.O.G. line, Mazinger Gashapon, Getter Robo KT figure, and the Mechasaurus is being represented by the Machine Saurer gashapon. Below the break will be a short battle report and photos of the game along with a post mortem discussing the mecha tactics employed for the Mobile Suits, Mazinger, Getter, and the Kaiju.
