Happy New Year! This battle was our favorite of the year.
Here’s a 1500pt battle report using the MechaStellar VER9.3 Core Rules featuring Amuro and Casval piloting the RX-78-2 Gundam’s with Kai and Hayato in Guncannons for support on one side and Mazinger, Getter Robo (Musashi solo) and Combattler V on the other side.
We are ahead of schedule and so for this month in addition to Combattler V and Voltes V we’re adding another fan favorite series to the roster, Great Mazinger (1974) the sequel to Toei’s Mazinger Z (1972). We’re also including a Core Rules revision which streamlines some of the Stellar Warfare rules in preparation for the upcoming Captain Harlock release.
Whenever we make a chance to the core rules (specifically anything before the advanced tactics section) we do a version update. For VER 9.3 the change was relatively small in the text but fairly large on the tabletop. We changed how [CC] weapons work, converting them over to the Push/Pull weapon profile established in a previous update and what’s more we allowed them to knock your foe out of melee before they can counterattack.
For this month’s MechaStellar update we are adding the classic combining super robots Combattler V and Voltes V, a well known staple for the SRW games. We have also updated the Core Rules to VER 9.3 with a changes that allow Close Combat [CC] weapons to prevent a counterattack and a streamlining of the SRW module. The Wargame Rules to VER 9.2 to account for some VP updates as well as the inclusion of the “Highly Skilled Pilot” upgrades which allow you to use a Skill like Accelerate or Bullseye for free once per turn. A summary of all changes can be found at the bottom of this post. You can find the updated rules and mecha profiles on the game downloads page: https://mechastellar.com/game-downloads/
Here’s a battle report for a large MechaStellar 1500pt game featuring 15+ units on both sides. This game was played before the recent HP / Evade overhaul and points rebalance so expect some discrepancies.
For the narrative we decided on portraying a slice of the Odessa campaign featuring some heavy hitters on both sides including Yuu Kajima’s Blue Destiny (with Hughes and Sumona in GM Cold Districts / GM Command Early type) and the White Dingo GM Sniper II on the Federation side and M’Quve and his Gyan along with Nimbus and the Efreet Custom on the Zeon side.
Yuu and the Blue Destiny weren’t paired up until after Odessa but a little anachronism is part of the fun in running a MechaStellar “What if?” game. Likewise the White Dingo was in Australia and the GM Sniper II wouldn’t be produced for some time.
Keep reading to see some anachronistic Gundam battles. At the end you’ll find the Gundam Tactics Post Mortem from both players.
This is a continuation of our previous size and scale post. This post serves to highlight examples on why you should not exclusively pursue a “True Scale” and instead stick with a nice aesthetically pleasing approximate scale, or same size versus movie scale.
MechaStellar is meant to be played with your favorite mecha series and there are a lot of different options for model kits and figures out there. This post is intended for players who want to setup a Super Robot Wars style Game using figures from different mecha series and different manufacturers. We are going to cover different sizes and scales as well as a few different product lines should you wish to start or expand your collection of giant fighting robots.
In addition to the Federation vs Zeon Sandbox campaigns, the following MechaStellar Narrative Campaigns received an update in December. All of them had various typo fixes, some had minor rebalances to enemies. Both the Getter Robo and Shin Mazinger campaigns were converted over to the new 20 Level pilot advancement system.
Here’s an early Christmas present for all of our Gundam fans. We’ve updated the Federation vs Zeon sandbox mission packs for Solo or Co-op play and added in Missions 11-15. We’ve also made a few tweaks to the core rules and wargames rules as well as a few additions to the unit roster based on player requests. You can find the update summary below.
NOTE – This is only for Federation and Zeon unit profiles. AU Gundam and Super Robots will update later this month.
Below you’ll find a battle report using the MechaStellar VER 9.2 Rules with units that released in the November 2023 Roster Update. For this match we are using 1/144 scale Gundam figures, Revoltech for Gurren Lagann, Enki and Lazengann and the recently released Moderoid Infinite Combining Gurren Dan Lagann. At the end we have a mecha tactics after action report.
On one side we have the GX-9900 from After War Gundam X as well as Gurren Lagann, King Kittan and most of the Gurren Brigade (Dayakkaiser, Kid Knuckle, Mo-Shogun, Sawzorthn, Twinboekun). On the other side we have Gundam Virsago and several Jenice and Septems represented by Zakus and Goufs as well as the Spiral King’s Lazengann and Viral’s original Enki. Total points is 2300 on each side.
